In detail

Born on 20 October 1978 in Najafgarh, on the outskirts of Delhi, Virender Sehwag gave batting a new, fearless form. His strategy was simple: score as many runs as possible in as little time as possible, whatever the pitch or attack. He even completed his first triple century with a six.

He made his Test debut on the fast pitch at Bloemfontein in South Africa and scored a century. He began as a middle-order batsman in Tests but later became an opener. He scored more than 8,000 runs in both Tests and ODIs.

In March 2004 he scored 309 against Pakistan at Multan, becoming the first Indian to score a Test triple century. In 2008 he scored 319 against South Africa at Chennai, joining Don Bradman and Brian Lara as one of the few batsmen with two Test triple centuries; Chris Gayle later joined the list. In 2009 he missed a third triple by just seven runs against Sri Lanka in Mumbai.

In 2011 he scored 219 against the West Indies at Indore, then the highest individual score in ODIs, a record later broken by Rohit Sharma. He retired from international cricket in October 2015.
