In detail

No pitch could defeat Dravid's hard work, technique and concentration, and for most of his career he remained a puzzle for bowlers around the world. At Adelaide in 2003 he spent 835 minutes at the crease across two innings against Australia, and against Pakistan he batted for more than 12 hours to score 270.

He scored runs on the fast pitches of Australia and England as well as in Pakistan and the West Indies.

After piling up runs in domestic cricket he entered the Indian team in 1996 and never looked back. He scored 13,288 runs in 164 Tests at an average of 52.31, including 36 centuries, and 10,889 runs in 344 ODIs. He always put the team first, even taking up wicketkeeping in ODIs when the side needed balance.

He was also a superb slip fielder: his 210 Test catches stood as the world record for a long time. Born in Indore on 11 January 1973, he grew up in Bengaluru. He retired from international cricket in March 2012 and later also served as head coach of the Indian team.
