In detail

He excelled not only behind the stumps but also in front of them. Born in Ranchi on 7 July 1981, Dhoni's rise in Indian cricket was nothing short of a fairy tale: he quickly became a national hero and, within three years, captain of the team. He is still regarded as one of India's most successful captains.

Under him India became the world's number one Test side and won the ODI World Cup.

His batting relied more on power than on classical technique and suited the shorter formats, though he played valuable Test innings in difficult situations too. Abroad, especially in England and Australia, he often struggled for runs.

He scored 4,876 runs in 90 Tests and 10,773 runs in 350 ODIs, with six and ten centuries respectively. He has the most dismissals for India as a wicketkeeper in both Tests and ODIs. As captain he won 27 of 60 Tests and 110 of 200 ODIs. Under his leadership India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

He retired from Test cricket in December 2014 and from international cricket in August 2020.
